Taipei GTA controls

A handful of keys run this game, and five of them do almost everything. Below is the full set for keyboard and mouse, the touch layout for phones, and the reason a key sometimes appears to do nothing at all — which is almost always a focus problem, not a missing binding.

If you have not started yet, the beginner guide walks through a first session in order. If you only want to drive, the scooter guide goes deeper on handling than a table can.

Do this before you press anything

Browsers send keystrokes to whichever element you last clicked. A webpage that contains a game is still a webpage, so if you scroll down to read and then press W, the page scrolls and the game hears nothing. Click once inside the game area first. If keys stop responding after you switch tabs and come back, click the game again.

On foot and general controls

Walking is how you learn the map without consequences. Move slowly through a block once before you try it at speed on a scooter.

On foot and general
ActionKeyWhen to use it
Move the character W+A+S+D Explore on foot and line up with anything you want to touch.
Look around Mouse Swing the camera and set the direction you are facing.
Sprint Shift Cross an open stretch faster — it does nothing while driving.
Jump Space On foot this jumps. The same key is the handbrake once you are in a vehicle.
Interact E Follow the prompt that appears when you face something usable.
Switch weapon / Reload Tab+R Read the in-game prompt the first time; bindings can differ by build.

Scooter and car controls

The vehicle keys reuse your left hand: the same W, A, S and D that walked you around now drive. Two things change, and both catch people out. Space stops being a jump and becomes the handbrake, and S stops being \"walk backwards\" and becomes brake-then-reverse.

Scooters and cars
ActionKeyWhen to use it
Enter / Exit a vehicle F Stand close to the scooter or car and wait for the prompt before pressing.
Accelerate W Tap it in short bursts until you can feel how fast the vehicle picks up.
Brake / Reverse S Brake before the corner. Keep holding it at a stop and you will back up.
Steer left / right A+D Look at the junction, not at the vehicle, and steer early.
Handbrake / Drift Space Driving only. On foot the same key jumps, so practise it on an empty road first.
Horn / Radio H+Q Sound controls that only exist while you are in a vehicle.
Change camera / Look behind V+C Use it when the vehicle hides the road ahead — the fix is usually the camera, not the steering.

The three driving habits worth learning early

  • Brake before the corner. Slowing down early costs a second; recovering mid-corner costs you the lane.
  • Fix the camera before you fix the steering. If the vehicle hides the road, press V for another angle instead of steering blind.
  • Tap, do not hold. Short presses of W teach you the acceleration curve faster than pinning it and hoping.

Map, phone and pause

These three keys turn wandering into a plan. They are safe to press at any speed, so use them whenever you are unsure where you are.

Map, phone and pause
ActionKeyWhen to use it
Open the map and set a destination M Pick a nearby destination the first time and get used to reading the map against the street.
Open the in-game phone T Missions, the metro and the other in-game apps live here.
Pause menu Esc Some browsers take the first Esc to leave fullscreen or release the mouse. Press it again.

Touch controls on a phone or tablet

On a touch device the keyboard is replaced by on-screen controls, and the actions stay the same. Landscape orientation is not optional in practice: portrait leaves no room for two thumbs and a road.

Touch controls on a phone
ActionKeyWhen to use it
Move Left stick A virtual stick on the left side of the screen.
Look around Right swipe Swipe on the right side of the screen while on foot.
Accelerate / Brake On-screen buttons Shown while driving. Landscape orientation leaves room for both thumbs.

The mobile controls article covers the device-specific details, including what to do when an embedded game feels cramped.

Controllers

The game's own main menu carries a controls guide with a controller section, and that page is authoritative for button mappings because pads label their buttons differently. Check that your browser recognises the pad before you assume the game is ignoring it. Keyboard shortcuts listed here should not be read as controller mappings.

Practise the Taipei GTA controls until they are automatic

Knowing that F enters a vehicle does not help you when a mission timer is running. Drill the pairs until they are automatic — the widget below pulls from the same table as everything above.

Drill: do you know the key?

Pick an answer, get instant feedback, and repeat until the whole set is automatic.

Find one control fast

Use this when you cannot remember a single key. Search by action (brake, map) or by the key itself.

Key reference

Type an action or a key to filter. This table is the same data the game guide pages use.

When a key seems to do nothing

  • The page scrolls instead of the character moving. The game does not have focus. Click inside the game.
  • Esc closed fullscreen and nothing else happened. Press Esc again; the browser consumed the first press.
  • Space does nothing useful in a car. It is the handbrake while driving and the jump on foot — same key, different context.
  • S makes you reverse instead of stopping. S brakes until you stop, then reverses. Release it once you are stationary.
  • Nothing works after switching tabs. Browsers pause background tabs. Return to the tab, click the game, carry on.

Frequently asked questions

What is the handbrake key in Taipei GTA?

Space. While driving it applies the handbrake, which is what you use to drift. On foot the identical key makes you jump instead.

How do I get into a car or scooter?

Stand close to the vehicle and press F. If nothing happens, you are probably slightly too far away or facing the wrong way — step closer and try again.

How do I open the map?

Press M. The same screen is where you set a destination, which is what turns the map into navigation rather than a picture.

Why does W scroll the page instead of moving my character?

The game does not have keyboard focus. Click once inside the game area, then press the key again. This is the single most common \"broken controls\" report.

Can I change the controls?

Check the settings and controls entry in the game's own main menu — that screen is authoritative and can differ between builds. This page documents the default keyboard and mouse layout.
